Power / Batteries / Gas / TV / Fuel

Q: How long do the batteries last for free camping?
A: It all depends on a number of things. Use of lights, entertainment systems, heating used and the number of times the fridge is opened. All our vehicles have a dual battery system. This means the engine battery is separate from the battery system used for internal appliances such as the fridge, lights and water pump. The appliance battery system will last approximately 12 hours when fully charged. The batteries only recharge when you drive the vehicle. Since the engine battery is separate, if you flatten one of the rear batteries, you will still be able to start the engine and drive. All vehicles have the facility to plug into electricity. When you plug into electricity in a caravan park all equipment automatically runs off 240V electricity rather than the batteries. You can then use appliances such as the television, microwave which only run off electricity. Some of our vehicles have solar panels which help recharge the batteries when parked, but the solar panels are not generally large enough to fully charge the batteries by themselves. A good guide is if you move location every 2 -3 days then the alternator charging will keep the batteries charged.

Q: Do the vehicles have power sockets?
A: Yes, however you need to be plugged into a power source on a campsite to use these.

Q: How long will the gas bottle last?
A: It depends what is running off the gas, as an example in the larger vehicles (4 and 6 berth motorhomes) using water heating and cooking from gas then one bottle (4.5kg) should last approx 2 weeks. If the vehicle has central heating and this is used it may reduce this to 1 week.

Q: Can I recharge my laptop in the vehicle?
A: If you are plugged in to a power supply at a campground then simply use a power point in the vehicle. If you wish to charge your laptop when not connected to power, you may use your own inverter which is available from electronics stores such as Dick Smith Electronics for less than NZ$100

Q:  Can you get good TV reception everywhere?
A: NZ has very limited reception outside of the metropolitan areas due to the amount of hills. Some of the vehicles have DVD facilities. Some other vehicles have Sattellite TV which provides excellent reception.

Q: Do I need to bring a plug adaptor?
A: New Zealand uses different power plugs to the rest of the world. New Zealand power outlets accept power plugs with 3 flat pins. Most likely, if you are coming from overseas you will need an adaptor. Find out more about NZ power plugs here.

Q: Can I connect the vehicle to a house electrical system if I am staying with friends and family?
A: NO. Government regulations do not allow for connection directly into a standard 240 volt plug in a house or garage with a 3 pin plug. There is the possibility of overheating and or fire.If a fire occurs as a result of plugging directly into a house, your insurance may become void. Campgrounds in New Zealand all have the correct power supply, your vehicle is equipped with this and you can plug directly in to mains power at any campsite.

Q: How much does diesel and petrol cost?
A: Hire a Holiday pays the diesel tax therefore diesel is much cheaper than petrol in New Zealand. However the rates at the pump fluctuate. For up to date fuel pricing go to www.pricewatch.co.nz.

Accessories

Q: Can we hire a GPS system from you? What is the cost?
A: We offer the TomTom unit for GPS at NZ$5 per day (maximum charge NZ$200).

Q: Can we bring our own child seat?
A: Yes

Q: Where do infants/babies sleep in the vehicles?
A: Most Portacots do not fit in our vehicles. For older children there is a safety net for the top (Luton) bed. For younger babies/toddlers, we suggest you consider one of these sleeping solutions for use during your holiday: The sleep store, or Baby Sunshine.

Camping

Q: Can you Freedom Camp in NZ?
A: Most parts of NZ have areas where free camping is available, provided the vehicle you have rented has toilet facilities on board and have a current self containment certificate. The best rule is to obey local signage, and ask at the local information centre for suitable sites. All Hire a Holiday vehicles that have toilets on board are certified self contained, which qualifies the hirer to stay over at Department of Conservation land (approx 300 sites around NZ), and many Auckland Regional Authority Parks (approx 60 parks). New Zealand National Parks also have areas set aside for camping. There are often showers, toilets, barbecues and picnic areas. National parks are also beautiful and peaceful locations to stay overnight. However, national parks do not usually offer powered sites. Please visit www.camping.org.nz to find out more about free camping in New Zealand.

Q: Do we have to book campgrounds in advance?
A: We advise you do book in advance during peak periods such as school holidays, public holidays and long weekends.

Q: What caravan parks are available?
A: We strongly recommend you stay in a caravan (RV) park. New Zealand has an extensive network of caravan parks in all major tourist centres and most towns. Caravan parks offer excellent recreational opportunities, plus essential shower and toilet facilities. Powered sites enable you to connect your vehicle to electricity. The approximate cost is NZ$30 - $40 per night. Every vehicle comes with a free campground guide.

Insurance / Charges / Medical

Q: Why is it important to take full insurance when renting a Motorhome?
A: There is nothing worse than finishing your holiday and having to argue over the cost of seemingly minor damages. Panel repairs and parts are very expensive for these vehicles. Also note that in NZ up to one third of all other vehicles on the road are not insured, which means that even if the fault is not yours, your will be resonsible for up to the value of your excess. Other common incidents are windscreen replacements and tyre damages.

Q: Is my bond refunded immediately?
A: If the vehicle is returned without damage, we refund the bond immediately, but it can take up to 5 working days for the funds to be credited to your account.

Q: Are there additional fees for extra drivers?
A: No extra fees apply.

Q: What if I have an accident or medical emergency?
A: ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) is the sole and compulsory provider of accident insurance for all work and non-work injuries for all residents and visitors to New Zealand . The ACC Scheme is administered on a no-fault basis, so that anyone, regardless of the way in which they incurred an injury, is eligible for cover under the Scheme. Due to the Scheme's no-fault basis, people who have suffered personal injury do not have the right to sue an at-fault party. For more details, please see the website www.acc.co.nz. However Hire a Holiday strongly recommends that all visitors to New Zealand take out additional travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Q: Do I need a special driver's licence?
A: A valid, current car driver's licence must be produced for everyone intending to drive a Hire a Holiday rental vehicle. State, overseas or international licences are acceptable. However, the licence must be in English characters for our staff to read.
